Cartier watches are ever growing in popularity, meaning that there are a lot of dupes or ‘fakes’ out there, which could easily be mistaken for the real thing.

If you’re planning on selling your watch you should ensure it’s a real Cartier timepiece before attempting to sell.

Below are a few ways to check if your Cartier watch is real.

Check the serial number

Cartier watches have engraved serial numbers on the back of the watch, whereas fakes have them etched on. Serial numbers should also consist of two letters and six numbers, however you will need to contact a Cartier specialist to see if the serial number is real or not.

True Cartier watches also come with a certificate with the serial number on, so you should check to see if the number matches the certificate or if a certificate came with your watch.

Check Spelling

Fake Cartier watches usually have an R missing in their name, spelling  ‘Catier’. If your watch is real the name and serial number will be engraved correctly.

Look for the trademark stone

Cartier watches have a gemstone (a blue sapphire stone) attached to the winder. If the gemstone appears to be glued on then this could be fake.

If you have a new model can it glow in the dark?

Many new Cartier watches use LumiNova to make the watches glow in the dark. Fake Cartier watches may be able to glow in the dark, but will appear much duller than the real thing as they use a cheaper alternative to make the watch glow.

Is the price too good to be true?

A true Cartier watch usually costs between £2,000 and £30,000. If someone is selling a Cartier watch for much less than this it is most likely a fake or they don’t know what they’re selling.

Weight

Cartier watches are usually quite heavy due to them being made from quality materials, however there are some exceptions. If your Cartier watch feels light then it’s likely to be a fake.

Check your case back

Below is a list of features you should find on your case back:

  • The Cartier logo
  • The declaration of the watch  being Swiss made
  • The declaration that the watch is water resistant
  • A four digit model number
  • A serial number made of two letters and six numbers

Does your watch have a ‘secret signature’?

Cartier watches usually have a ‘secret signature’ on either the 7 or 10 o’clock mark. The signature tends to say Cartier in delicate capital letters, of which is usually a sign that your watch is authentic.
